This is a small establishment and seating a party of 13 is a challenge. Yet out server upstairs worked at it and got us settled. Service might have been on the slower side but the food was very good.

Anytime the wait is too long at Red Bar, Shorty's gets our business. It is right across the street from RB. Lots of people go to Shorty's for appetizers and drinks while they wait for their dinner table at Red Bar, but you should give Shorty's a chance for your dinner, as well. We've been here 5 or 6 times and only had one bad experience. They were "out" of everything we wanted. Anyways, the lime soup is a must, so is their ceviche (both are out of this world good). Shrimp and andouille sausage grits is a wonderful entree. Try to get a table upstairs and try to make it for sunset. Great view. Perfect companion to Red Bar for Grayton Beach! Hit it up, man!

Great food, service and key lime pie with a view of the ocean what more could you ask for?

    1. The Shrimp Po-Boy is awesome. 2. The house margarita and tuna dip is great. 3. The decor is really cute. 4. Server Melissa is the best!

Second meal at this restaurant. First meal, fish tacos, were not too good but hesitated to write review on one meal experience. Just had second lunch meal and verified that the fish tacos were too expensive for such a bland taste. Will not be back. Stairs steep and winding, very difficult for older diner to navigate. And on this hot August day, air conditioning upstairs not working. Just not a good dining experience.

We ordered a to go meal and were disappointed. The hamburger was ordered medium well and was served medium rare, and the macaroni and cheese was just dry penne pasta- the cook forgot to add the cheese?! On a positive note, the shrimp poboywas good and had large plump shrimp, the bartender was very nice, and the restaurant offered to comp our next meal. I recommend you Double check everything before you leave on any to go orders

Place is amazing! Food is so much better than The Red Bar. Had the ceviche, fish tacos and local salad with shrimp. And they have FOUNDERS BEER!! Extra points for not having crappy beer!

Don't even know where to start with this one. Came in at 2:59 and was handed a VERY short lunch menu, but the couple who came in 15 minutes after received a nice dinner menu. My waiter was horribly depressing and lacked any sort of energy. My waitress had a black eye? I had about 4 sandwiches to choose from to eat, and a shrimp basket, which did not match the one menu I had seen in the website. The atmosphere was so uncomfortable I couldn't bring myself to ask about the menus. My drink was empty for most of my meal, the food was bland and honestly a little gross, there was no music, and we were the only people in the restaurant. Spent over 40 dollars to get 3 gross sandwiches and 3 waters. So disappointing :/

Lousy service, mediocre food and dirty table. The crab legs are a joke! They are the size of a hermit crab's. The chicken was charred and the fries were from frozen. Over-priced and over-rated. I shan't return. The only thing good? The drinks.

Yummy food with a great view of the beach! Cute to see all pictures of the dogs. Will come back when I have the chance to!

Music was decent, drinks were so-so. Older male bartender was awful. Kept having issues with serving people at one end of the bar. Ok? Just serve the other end and get to us when you can. It wasn't like anyone was getting upset. Poor show old man.

Their menu said local fish all over it. I asked what the local fish was and they said tilapia. Food was not good!

Enjoyed the atmosphere and locale (tons of dog pictures and a view of the beach) but the food was okay. We had the grouper and shrimp ceviche as an appetizer. It was really good but felt it had a bit too much liquid in it. They were out of some food and beer. We each had to order our second choice of beer because they were out of our first and my second choice was only semi-cold so the server poured it in to a ice cold glass. Which was nice except he literally just turned the bottle straight into the glass, it was as if he had never poured a beer in his life. This obviously created a lot of foam so I didn't even have the whole beer in my glass and it was a bottle conditioned beer so out came all the yeast particles too. I had the 30A Fish Tacos. They were decent. The pineapple salsa was really good. The grilled tortillas were definitely grilled - and had a grilled taste to them that wasn't ideal. I got the hushpuppies as a side and was quite looking forward to them. I didn't even finish one. They were huge and because of their size they obviously had to be cooked longer. But this resulted in the inside being decent but the outside was so chewy and tough. Super disappointing.

This place has gone totally down hill. We had a party of 12 and we were the only table. Two 2 tops came in and got there food before us. The waiter was rude, come to find out he's the general manager! !! Food was cold and came out at different times, most was mediocre. The awful waiter/general manager added insult to injury by adding 18% gratuity. We all live here and none of us will ever go back. With that general manager the place won't continue to be in business long. They might make it through tourist season but to survive they need the repeat local business and they don't have it.

Good food but pricey for what you get. Fish Tacos were good and the $5 margaritas may have had a little tequila in them. Parking is not easy.

This was our first trip to Grayton Beach to eat. We were staying in Seagrove Beach and thought we would try Shorty's since the Red Bar was packed. We went upstairs to eat and right off the bat we we told that they were short handed on wait staff. From the previous reviews this seems to be a habitual problem that the management should resolve; especially during spring break! However we were not in a hurry and the waiter was trying very hard to please even though he was completely swamped and in way over his head. Atmosphere - nothing special. Basic tables and chairs with butcher paper tablecloths. It did take quite a while for my friend to get her beer. In fact she finally decided to just order two so she wouldn't have to wait again. We ordered the fried asparagus with lump crab and shrimp for an appetizer. It was really delicious! The asparagus was fried in a crispy batter and cooked just perfectly. The crab and small shrimp were in a "you can't get enough of it" lemony cream sauce (was that a hint of sherry?). We wouldn't let the server take the empty platter because we didn't want any of the sauce to go to waste! We used it for dipping with our entrées. We all ordered fried seafood baskets ($19). My friends got just shrimp and I got shrimp and oysters. First of all, these weren't baskets. They were large platters piled high with seafood. Also included were the basic fries, coleslaw (a little warm) and two hush puppies (more on the pups later). For once the seafood was the star of the plate, not a pile of fries with a few shrimp on top. The shrimp and oysters were sweet and fresh and fried in a crispy batter. Oh, did I mention that the shrimp were large? Some took two hands to eat! Very impressive. Between the three of us we brought home at least a dozen shrimp for another meal. They were so big we couldn't eat them all. Now the hushpuppies - what a disaster! They were dense, hard and impossible to eat. I took one bite and had to do a Gorden Ramsey and spit it out. Disgusting. I am a bit of a hushpuppy aficionado and know when the cornmeal batter has been overworked. This wasn't just overworked, it was beaten to death. Trust me -don't eat the hushpuppies. The 3 stars are solely for the appetizer and stellar seafood. The service was the best that it could be given the situation - I don't fault the waiter. He did his best. However, it makes the whole experience something much less than it could have been. If the owners want a really successful restaurant they need to cover all the bases. It could be a gem - but right now it has a long way to go.

We had the shrimp baskets and fish tacos and the food was good. We sat upstairs and the waiter up there was terrible and managed to make all of us angry with his terrible attitude. We had s group of 9 and an 18% gratuity was automatically added so we couldn't even reflect the bad service in the tip.

  • Steve T.

Fried seafood meets expectations if you're looking for run in the mill fried food - the kind that's hard to mess up. Other items are truly awful - not worth getting. Ceviche is bitter, fried soft shell was under fried and poorly battered. Service and atmosphere are terrible as well. They advertise a gulf view - none exist.

Loved this place! After trying 4 other local restaurants that all had an hour plus wait we found this place, and were so glad that we did! The wait was about 10 minutes to seat a table for ten. The food: smoked fish dip appetizer was delicious!!!! The wings were great and crispy. Simple but awesome were the French fries and the homemade ranch. Yum! Almost everyone at the table had the fish tacos and were very pleased. We all walked out happy and stuffed. Didn't even have room for dessert but wished that we had! If you are near-come here!!! Oh! dog to to mention! They WILL cook your fresh caught fish as long as it is cleaned and filleted! We will be back tomorrow with our fillets! :)

The building is unassuming and delightful. The service was ok. The grilled seafood platter was ok. The crab cakes at mostly crab but had enough red pepper and green onion that my wife couldn't eat them. The view is spectacular as was the asparagus with shrimp and lump crab meat. Over all I give 3 stars, but the asparagus with shrimp and lump crab deserves 10 stars. So we will just settle for 4 stars.

Great neighborhood Local place. Love it!! Dog themed after owners now deceased Westie named Shortie. Tons of napkin sketches of Shorty and tons of dog photos of local beach dogs. New fav indeed!! Live music at times also.

If the food wasn't so good at this restaurant, I would give it 1 star. The service was beyond horrible and my entire party felt like they were unwanted. I would not recommend this if you're trying to have a good time.

Only okay food. Liked the fried seafood. Bad service. "Gulf view" really isn't there.... You can kind of see the beach..... A little bit? Will not return. Credit card machine broke and we had to go find an ATM to pay for our meal.

Worst service we've ever had at the beach. Sat for 2 hours after we ordered, got 7 of 9 orders, took the other 2 home and they were inedible. Never any explanation of why it was taking so long from the surly waiter. And it was pricy for what we got. Avoid this place at all costs.

  • Denis C.

I didn't know quite what to make of this place. We headed upstairs to be seated we were told it would be a 20 minute wait. We asked, "Don't you want our names?" We headed back downstairs and sat at the bar and put in an order for the food. We ordered the grilled mahi mahi, a cup of lime soup and a twice baked potato. The food was ok and came out a little bit on the cool side. We appreciated the service from our server, but the place itself was a little chaotic. In the end, the experience wasn't worth the long wait for a parking space to open up.

My family enjoyed the great food and views of Shorty's. We were very suprised that all the crowds were heading over to the nearby "red bar" to eat, Actually we had just as good as food at a cheaper price. The biggest plus was being able to hear each other talk at dinner. - We will return especially with the save $25 coupon from resturant.com

Loved the dog themed atmosphere, pictures of dogs on the walls and and luckily the food was great because there was a waiter upstairs that was very rude. We had a big group and basically he didn't want to accommodate us. We switched to a waitress who had to work hard to make up for his rudeness so it worked out well. Shrimp was great as we're other entrees. Bartenders were nice but drinks were weak.

  • Jill M.

The food here was delicious! We got there pretty early so we were the only ones sitting upstairs for awhile, but there's nothing wrong with that. I can't remember what I had (since this was over a month ago), but I know everyone I was with enjoyed what they had.

Great location but parking is a little tough. Had a great fried shrimp dinner upstairs. First floor is a bar with live music at night.

We loved our meals. Husband had grilled shrimp and fried oysters and said they were delicious. I had the special--grouper topped with shrimp and crab with a wonderful sauce. Service was friendly and fast. Better to come early to see the sunset over the water.

Quite disappointed with this place. We went for the great music and some good reviews of the food. Music is in the bar only. And upstairs we were served a one hour wait for food, (1/2 hour just to get our order). Nevertheless the orders were wrong. Hint to cooks (who appeared to be about 15) well done is not medium, twice baked potatoes is not half a baked potato with warm potato salad (hardly worth the $2 up charge) on top and 5 spears of aparugus with 3 over cooked/2 raw as bamboo-does not a meal make. In general avoid, lest taking the family for a meal turn into a frustrating and expensive experience.

Complete disappointment considering the two positive reviews they have posted on their website from the local papers. I am allowing two stars because the gumbo was good and the blackened grouper was average. Otherwise, the decor and cleanliness of the upstairs dining was questionable and the service was bad from the start. Starting with the fried asparagus appetizer that took 20 minutes to receive and used less than fresh crab in the sauce. It had that fishy smell when it hit the table. When we ordered we ask to substitute a salad for one of the listed sides, and this was not possible, despite us offering to pay a service charge. Once we placed the order we began the long wait. Clearly they were under staffed and tables next to us remained with used dishes because they had no bus boys. The waiters would finally get around to cleaning the tables which clearly took time away from servicing clients. My wife would have loved a glass of wine with her dinner, but we could never get a waiter to come buy. In summary, decent food, poor service, poor atmosphere led to a very disappointing night.

We held my brother's rehearsal dinner at Short's and it was fabulous. Guests could choose among grouper with crab and shrimp, low country shrimp or the filet. The food was amazing and the 60 people that attended the dinner were still raving about it the next day. The appetizers served during cocktail hour were just as good. The staff went above and beyond to make the night very special. I highly recommend Shorty's for dinner or for large special events.

Food was decent for what we got and was served pretty quickly. Went in mid afternoon and were only 2 other tables eating at this time. The waiter seemed to want to be anywhere but dealing with the 3 customers there this time of day. He wasn't rude but was one of the most unwelcoming servers I've ever had.

I went to Shorty's Surfside and Topside while vacationing in Seaside, Florida. It was right across the street from the famed Red Bar and seemed to have a good menu so we checked it out. The place is beachy, as expected for the area, but not as clean or fun looking as its competition. They had a guy playing acoustic guitar and singing by the bar, which entertained us while we waited, but he was nothing great. The menu was a mix of fish, salads, a few steaks, and some sushi. Our server, unfortunately, was the worst part of the experience. She was only half polite, and rather un-knowledgeable. She had the gall to ask us if we really even wanted to hear about the specials ("No, ma'am, I'll just go downstairs and check the blackboard myself.") which she hadn't even memorized. She had to read them word-for-word off of her server pad. She did, however, get our drinks quickly and keep the water glasses full, while properly busing the table and keeping tabs on our meal. The food: I ordered a cup of gumbo, which was actually very good. It was thick, chunky, fresh, spicy, and loaded with little sea creatures. I ordered the Floridian Salad with Chicken as my entree, it was disappointing. The walnuts sucked, they served the dressing on the side (which was a very tasty lime vinaigrette) when it should have been tossed. The chicken was nicely seasoned, but tough, and there were but a few little orange segments that consisted more of peel and pith than of flesh. This place also had the tackiest thing I've ever seen in a restaurant: local advertisements printed on their pint glasses. I'm paying you to bring me food and good service, not to brainwash me with ads from local chiropractors and tire service shops. Lame. Also lame: $15 for a top-shelf Long Island Iced Tea. Yes, it was a strong and flavorful, but several dollars over-priced. Dessert featured Bananas Fosters, which was also fair. The sauce was good, but melted everything into a pool of mush by the time it arrived, and according my mother, "Lacked in the banana department". Next year I'll just go to The Red Bar two nights in a row if I'm in the Grayton Beach area.

We came to the Red Bar the night before and saw (and were intrigued) by Shorty's. After a false start at a local Mexican place, decided to return. Beer was good, cold and well-priced. Wings had good flavor, wish they were a little more crispy. The Hush Puppies were fluffy and crispy. Burger was great, perfectly cooked as we ordered it - our server was terrific, though service a bit slow as others have mentioned....

After waiting for an hour to eat at the Red Bar, we caved in and ate here. Very glad we did! The smoked salmon rolls, sushi, burgers and ceviche were all awesome. Nice view of the ocean, too.,

Loved the atmosphere, doggie lovers restaurant! Food was very good, we had the shrimp po boy sandwich with onion rings & shrimp basket with short's pasta salad. Everything was delicious! Great view of the beach & ocean. Would definitely recommend it

While staying in this area, my family and I were looking for a simple, fried fish shack experience that didn't seem like it was managed and marketed from the home office in Dallas. When deciding between this place and the famed Red Bar across the street, we decided, based on the fact that the Red Bar had a line of people out the door with a Margaritaville vibe that repelled us across the street to Shorty's. Shorty's had plenty of room, but parking is a real challenge for either of these places. There is nothing special about Shorty's, but nothing bad - other than a dated who-gives-a-damn decor (but not the intentional kind complete with faux-vintage signs and folk art). The food was as good (read "OK") as expected. This is fast fish food for tourists who want to sip sugary alcoholic beverages and listen to "that guy" with "that guitar" with "that repertoire" (you know the one) and at least get what I expect to be local fish and not frozen Sysco-matic foodstuff. As long as you know that going in, it's not a disappointment. Our service was great and actually very friendly and attentive. In fact, the owner/manager came by our table to check-in and was actually the one who brought our food to the table. Overall a pleasant experience, but don't expect anything like a local hangout with authentic personality. If you're looking for that, it's further down the coast from here.

  • Teresa H.

After reading the reviews we were optimistic about this place. After eating here I would definitely not return. The service was less than good as was our food. My daughter's grilled cheese sandwich was burned and the fish tacos I had were very bland. The Mac n Cheese is advertised as homemade with toasted bread crumbs. Mine came without the bread crumbs I asked for this to be corrected. The server brought a new order with dried bread crumbs sprinkled on top. The food was not hot when served. The food was overpriced for what we got. To top it off the bill had an 18% gratuity added for our party of 2 adults and 2 children.

  • Lesa T.

Let me start by saying the parking is horrible. You just have to hope you find a place. But once you get that taken care of, prepare for a great meal. We were seated upstairs with a great view at sunset. We started with the ceviche and fried tortillas - what a wonderful way to begin a meal. YUM!! Then we had blackened mahi mahi, grilled chicken breast and the shrimp scampi. It was all great, the dill squash/zucchini and grits as the sides were sooo good. It was a fabulous meal.

  • JULIE S.

Don't wait until you can't get in Red Bar to go to Shorty's. We had a drink at Red Bar (cool place), but chose Shorty's for dinner and were not disappointed. Our table of four had the ceviche, with homemade chips, seafood gumbo, Oahu (avocado with lump crabmeat topped with a soy/wasabi sauce drizzled on it), a spicy tuna roll and Key Lime pie, to go. I was skeptical at first about the very diverse menu, but everything was excellent, including the service provided by Joleen. Tip: if you have any chips left over from the ceviche, save them and ask for some honey at the end of the meal...the honey over the chips....like homemade sopapilla's.

  • Dem L.

We went on a Tuesday night about an hour after sunset so there was no view - our fault for bad timing. On the upside, since NOBODY was there, parking was easy and service was quick. The cheese grits, hush puppies, and fries were all really flavorful. Catch of the day and the burgers were so-so for the cost. May try it again for lunch, but would not bother with dinner unless the timing of my visit coincided with the sunset and a clear view.

we were actually sitting at red bar when shorty's began to seem more appealing. it may have been the little dictators loudly discussing their portfolios/net worth. both were in need of a good, solid thrashing. or locked in a closet with ed meese. shorty's seems to attract my sort of people---reprobates, surfers, and guys from baltimore. still like red bar, however.

  • Tim J.

Not a bad little place, but not blown away by it. I had sushi and a chili dog. The sushi roll was the special, and it really was something unique, but I like raw fish in there somewhere usually. This was a fried oyster roll with nori, cucumber, and rice of course, but then finished with onion and pickle on top, served with tartar sauce on the side. It was definitely unique, but not something that really made me want it in place of some fresh cut hamachi. The chili dog was pretty good, but nothing special either. For the location the prices seem very inexpensive to what they could charge. Overall the food might get a four just for the mix, and good quality for a beach restaurant, but the service wasn't the best. The bartender wasn't the most friendly person, and as upstairs where there is a view of the beach was full for lunch, it was the only place to eat. I will stop back perhaps when I'm already in the area, but not worth driving out to get a bite.
